The 2020-2021 School Year: Responding to the COVID-19 Pandemic
In these complicated and uncertain times, Cedar River Montessori is committed to providing a safe and supportive learning environment for our students. We follow all policies and protocols from the Washington State Department of Health, Seattle and King County Public Health, Washington Department of Children, Youth, and Families, and Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction. Safety measures include splitting classrooms into dedicated, non-mixing cohorts of 7-12 students, social distancing, cloth masks (required ages 5 and up; strongly recommended for all ages), enhanced cleaning and sanitizing, increased outdoor time and classroom ventilation, and high-volume HEPA filtration to maintain at least five Air Changes per Hour (ACH) in all indoor spaces.
Cedar River Montessori is dedicated to supporting our student community through these challenging times with a focus on social and emotional connections with each other and their teachers, both in-person and remotely. We are currently operating in a blended schedule across all of our programs - here is what that looks like for the different age levels:
Early Childhood (Ages 3-6): Students on campus for 2.5 days/week total (2 days in a Montessori classroom plus one half day in an immersive Outdoor Education class). Two of our former Early Childhood Montessori teachers are providing additional remote support with morning and afternoon circles and parent support drop in.
Lower Elementary (Grades 1-3): Students on campus for 2.5 days/week total (2 days in a Montessori classroom plus one half day in an immersive Outdoor Education class). A dedicated Lower Elementary assistant teacher provides additional remote support with morning circles and individual and small group student check-ins.
Upper Elementary (Grades 4-6): Students are on campus for 2 days/week, maximizing use of outdoor classroom space. Daily morning meetings for both in-person and remote days, along with check-ins and small group meetings to support students on days when they are working from home.
Middle School (Grades 7-8): Students are in a 4:10 Schedule (4 days in person followed by 10 days - 6 school days - remote). This schedule maximizes continuous days of on-campus learning while providing risk mitigation during remote learning.
