Middle School
Grades 7 - 9
Program
Our Middle School follows the Montessori philosophy of a three-year developmental stage by encompassing grades seven through nine. There is an option to graduate at 8th grade for those wishing to enter high school as ninth grade students. The program is designed to offer students the option to meet all state academic requirements for both traditional middle school as well as grade nine.
This is a relatively new program and we are adapting it to take full advantage of local and regional resources as well as utilize the students' interests and passions in order to make learning meaningful.
Curriculum
Language Arts
Composition and grammar are taught in tandem and in the context of meaningful content. The writing process is applied to most written work, and pieces are frequently taken to final published form in styles of writing ranging from narrative and expository to research and reports. Literature study and discussion center around the novel as well as poetry, plays and short stories.
Social Studies
Our Social Studies curriculum focuses on Washington State history, providing students a direct connection with our history through visits to local historical sites and museums. We also study the development of governments at the local, state, federal, and world levels, and visit local governments to meet our public leaders and see government in action.
Science
Students work with chemistry, biology, geology, physics, and astronomy. Emphasis is placed on practical application through experimentation in a lab setting, and we strive to instill in our students a sense of curiosity and excitement about our natural world. Our curriculum also incorporates our unique setting through field study in the wetlands environment surrounding the school.
Mathematics
Building on a firm foundation of math facts and concepts, students do work in higher maths including algebra and geometry with lessons tailored to the individual student's atitudes. Mathematics is applied in practical ways in our science curriculum as well as through extensions such as personal finance, population studies and the economies of the world.
Technology
Technology is integrated into our entire curriculum, so that our students develop proficiency working with a wide range of technologies. Students perform online research, capture and track data, and prepare and present final reports using multimedia. They create a digital portfolio their last year of middle school to demonstrate mastery in each subject area from the Sciences to Fine Arts.
Physical Education
Our physical education program focuses on individual development and forming healthy life habits as well learning how to work effectively as a team. Teamwork is taught both through competitive sports such as Ultimate Frisbee and team building exercises like ropes courses. Swimming and cross country running are both popular extracurricular programs at Cedar River Montessori.
Fine Arts, Music, and Drama
Students create works of art using media ranging from watercolor to clay, studying both the history of art and the artists who make it. We experience arts and music first hand through visits to local galleries and museums, symphonies, and dance performances. The drama program provides a deeper level of involvement with our elementary school play and introduces design, set construction, sound and lighting, and directing. There are also leadership opportunities assisting our youngest learners with their pre-school drama productions.
Foreign Language
Students learn Spanish through Rosetta Stone. CRMS will be adopting a school-wide language program that will be taught by an instructor.
Community and Service Learning
Community involvement is a cornerstone of the Montessori middle school philosophy, and provides an important platform for students as they leave the classroom to interact with and impact the world at large. Opportunities for community and service learning include projects focused on caring for our environment, mentorships in the local business community, and assisting charitable foundations.
Schedule
Middle School at CRMS begins at 8:30 and ends at 3:00. This allows students to take advantage of after-school extra-curricular offerings at their local school. The schedule for the day is usually set with the students and teacher working together to determine what works for the class. As the program develops we expect to build more structure that works with the rhythms of the school and the needs of the program.
Tuition and Fees
Annual tuition is billed in ten equal monthly payments. The enrollment fee and deposit are due upon acceptance. The book and materials fee is due with first month's tuition in June prior to the start of the school year. The remaining nine payments are billed monthly, starting in September. The deposit is refundable at the end of the school year or is rolled over into the next school year. If the student leaves before the completion of the school year, the deposit is forfeited as are any payments already due. Please consult your contract and contact the business office if you have any questions.
